If you Google “South by Southwest,” the top of the results page gives you a succinct snippet answer: Canceled. The annual South by Southwest event normally takes place in Austin, Texas, each March, but organizers canceled the 2020 edition because of growing concerns over the Covid-19 pandemic.
But while most of the festival is wiped for 2020, one bright point emerged Thursday: SXSW has teamed with Amazon Prime Video and will stream films originally slated to participate in the SXSW Film Festival in what it calls “Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection.”
Filmmakers who were originally scheduled to participate in the festival can opt into the Amazon Prime event, which does not have firm dates yet, but will reportedly take place in late April, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Some filmmakers may not choose to opt in because of distribution conflicts. But the good news for potential viewers is that Amazon is putting the streaming event outside its Amazon Prime paywall, meaning you don’t even have to have Amazon Prime to view the films for free—just an Amazon account.
“Ever since SXSW was canceled by the City of Austin, we’ve been focused on how we could help the incredible films and filmmakers in the SXSW 2020 Film Festival lineup,” said Janet Pierson, director of film at SXSW, told the Associated Press. “We’re inspired by the adaptability and resilience of the film community as it searches for creative solutions in this unprecedented crisis.”
You can find the entire original lineup of films for the 2020 SXSW Film Festival on the event’s website, but keep in mind, filmmakers will have to opt into the 10-day streaming event. And you can sign up
